Burnout

Burnout is a state of emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion usually caused by excessive and prolonged stress. It often occurs when you feel overwhelmed, emotionally drained, and unable to meet never-ending demands, and the longer the resulting stress continues, the more you lose interest and motivation.

Burnout saps your energy. It leaves you feeling increasingly helpless, hopeless, cynical, and sometimes even resentful, until, at a certain point, you may feel you have nothing more to give.

The negative effects of this condition can affect every area of your personal and professional life and frequently have long-term effects on your body. This can leave you more vulnerable to illnesses like colds and flu.

Because burnout has so many consequences, it's important to deal with it as soon as you can.

Here are some common indicators to help you decide if you are suffering from burnout:

You may be at risk of burnout if:

  • You’re exhausted all the time.

  • Every day feels like a bad day.

  • Everything seems like a waste of time and energy.

  • You feel like most of your day is spent doing tasks you find either terribly dull or overwhelming.

  • You feel like nothing you do is appreciated or makes a difference.

Signs and symptoms of burnout

It's normal to have days when you feel helpless, overloaded, or unappreciated. On days like this even getting out of bed feels like hard work. But, if you feel like this most of the time, you may be burned out. Burnout is a gradual process that doesn’t happen overnight. The signs and symptoms can be subtle at first, but they become worse as time goes on.

It is important to think of any early symptoms as warning signs. They are helpful because they show you something is wrong and needs to be addressed. If you pay attention to the signs, and actively reduce your stress levels, you can prevent a major breakdown. But, if you ignore them, you’ll eventually burn out.

Physical signs and symptoms of burnout
  • Feeling tired and drained most of the time.

  • Lowered immunity, frequent illnesses.

  • Frequent headaches or muscle pain.

  • Change in appetite or sleep habits.

Emotional signs and symptoms of burnout

  • Feeling helpless, trapped, and defeated.

  • Detachment, feeling alone in the world.

  • Loss of motivation.

Maybe you are reading this because you recognize the warning signs of impending burnout, but perhaps you’re already past the breaking point. Either way, trying to keep going on your own without changing anything will only cause more emotional and physical damage.
